How to Make Your Social Media Updates Count

They may be short and sweet, but you’ve got to make your social media updates count. Your business may depend on it!

You’re updating your accounts, letting your fans know what’s going on, but you’re not gaining much traction. No one is liking your posts or commenting on them. You’re not gaining many new followers. What gives?

If you’re not getting the results you’re after on social media, it may be because your updates aren’t as impactful as they could be. Let’s go over a few ways you can make your social media updates count.

When Are You Posting?

It could be as simple as changing the times you post your updates. Because most workplaces frown upon using company time to hang out on social media sites, a lot of people check their accounts before and after work. Post your updates early in the morning, at around 6 to 8 am, and in the evening, from about 7 to 9 pm. If you can’t post at those times, not to worry – there are tools that let you schedule updates. A few of the popular ones include TweetdeckTwitterrific and SocialOomph. You can use them from your cellphone or tablet to send updates wherever and whenever you want.

What Are You Posting?

We’ve discussed a few of the no-nos you shouldn’t do on Facebook and Twitter.  Things like making it about you all the time. Constantly selling to your audience. Getting too personal with your updates. These are sure-fire ways to alienate and lose your customers. They crave information that’s important to them. Do some research, offer relevant information and pepper it with updates about your business you think they’ll appreciate.  There are different schools of thought on this, but most experts believe in about a 70/30 ratio – 30 percent about you, 70 percent not about you. Yes, this seems like a lot of updates are not about you, but they can include information that’s important to your type of business. Trust us, it will work out in your favour if you stick to the formula

How Long Have You Been Posting?

Hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day—and neither are successful social media accounts. Sometimes it takes months and years of consistent posting to build a following… and that’s if you’re doing it right. Slow and steady wins the race. Post relevant content, communicate with your following and be patient. In time, you’ll see your numbers and user engagement growing.
