It’s Great to Be a Web Design Student

Five Reasons Why ...

Whenever I tell people that I’m studying Web Design and Animation, I usually get the same response – a genuine grin and an enthusiastic “cool!”. I’m not so sure that this response would be quite the same if I were in school for say paralegal or architectural technology. Regardless, I feel pretty darn lucky to be a web design student and here are five good reasons why:

1. You Get To Make Really Cool Things

This is arguably the number one reason why it’s so great to be a student of web design! With the skills you learn in class, you are able to create some really, really cool things. For example, in the three semesters I have been in school, I’ve created my own content management system, a time-tracker web application and a to-do list web application. Need to track your baseball stats? I totally made an app for that!

2. Great Online Resources

There are so many amazing resources that will help you out along the way. I’ve already discussed a few of the excellent resources available in this article, but I just stumbled across this little gem that will certainly help you out in a big way. Learn to Code: A Web Development Road-map for Beginners covers everything from basic HTML all the way to Git and Rails. It’s almost like you don’t even have to go to class! Hey, I said almost! You still need to go.

3. It’s The Best of Both Worlds

I would be a very sad girl if all I did was talk about for loops and while loops and variables all day. Luckily, web design and front-end development in general combines the best of both worlds. Not only do you get to use logic and solve problems, but you also get to consider the aesthetic appeal of the things you create. Basically, you get to make it work and you get to make it pretty – the best of both web worlds.

4.The Web is in a State of Flux

Things are changing in the web right now. HTML5 and CSS3 continue to grow in popularity and will likely soon be the industry standard. In addition, with the popularity of mobile, responsive design continues to be a driving force. It’s an exciting time and, as a student, you’ll get to learn the latest in web, graduating with the knowledge and skills that are in high demand in the industry.

5.You Get To Meet Really Cool People

The field of web design attracts a variety of different people who you will get to interact with and learn from. In addition, freelancing on the side in order to build your portfolio puts you in contact with a variety of different people from a variety of different fields and industries. In this way, you can build your professional network and also meet some really neat individuals.

So what about life after school and out in the wild? Is it still pretty darn great? Luckily, yes! The world of web is always changing and as such, to be successful, you need to be the “perpetual student”, willing to learn and grow with the industry.
